Tour Summary

This 7 day mountain bike touring tour visits the wild west coast of Tasmania in a big circuit from Launceston. Visit many interesting and varied places as you ride over to and up the west coast. Plenty of fun mountain biking along scenic roads and tracks while being fully supported and looked after. See wildlife, stand by waterfalls, gaze at mountains, enjoy short walks, stay in old mining towns and see the most amazing wilderness scenery ever.

Itinerary

Day 1 Alice Springs (A)

Arrive in Alice Springs via interstate flight. Bus transfer 1.00 pm airport pickup to the Double Tree in Alice. Meet and greet tour guides at hotel foyer at 2 pm. Set up hire bikes. Bike rental begins at 3 pm. Welcome to country ceremony before dinner at the Double Tree restaurant with the Larapinta trail walkers.

Day 2Alice Springs (A) Project visit day

Project visit day. Bus transfer 8.30 am hotel pickup to and from project visit time TBA. Project visit info TBA. 2 pm optional guided fun epic single-track ride of 25 km starting from the west side of Alice this time. The newly revamped “West Mac Trail” single track is awesome. A must do not to be missed trail. Bus transfer 6.45 pm hotel pick up to and from dinner in Alice Springs. Dinner venue TBA.

Day 3Alice Springs (A) to Glen Helen (B)

Challenge starts. Bus transfer 8.30 am hotel pick up. Drive short distance to start of first ride, the fun 15 km Simpsons gap track, morning tea break, then cycle 45 km along the scenic bitumen to Ellery Big Hole for a swim and lunch break. More scenic afternoon bitumen cycle 40 km along West MacDonnell ranges with a short stop to see the ochre pits, an indigenous site where ochre was collected to use for paint, continue cycling to Glen Helen Lodge (B) where you can enjoy another amazing gorge swim a cold beer and heaven.

Day 4Glen Helen (B) Day trip

Cycle out of camp with no need to pack up. Enjoy a short scenic 10 km cycle to the amazing Ormiston Gorge. Enjoy the fantastic 1 hour “Ghost gum gorge loop walk” followed by morning tea. Then it’s a cycle up to Tyler’s Pass lookout then downhill totalling 45 km before we take a short detour of 5 km on dirt road into the sacred site known as Gosse’s Bluff (C) for lunch. After lunch we drive to the small community of Hermannsburg (D) to see the house of the famous aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira. We then head back to camp where you will be dropped off for an easy 20 km cycle back to camp. Enjoy a swim and cold beer.

Day 5Glen Helen (B) to Kings Creek Station (E)

Today we leave the scenic West Macdonell ranges and head for the spectacular Kings Canyon region (E). We first drive to get some km done, about 2 hours’ drive on bitumen & gravel roads to a fantastic lookout that overlooks the Kings Canyon gorge area for morning tea. Cycle 30 km from lookout mostly downhill to the Kings Canyon Resort for lunch and a real coffee from the café. After lunch enjoy an easy 40 km road cycle to our nights camp at Kings Creek Station (E) a rustic remote working station. Has a pool and bar.

Day 6Kings Creek Station (E) to Alice Springs (A)

Last day of the cycling tour and we have saved the best until last. Today we have 2 magic things to do. First up once we pack up, we will drive to Kings Canyon where we will do the spectacular “rim walk”. It takes about 2 hours, morning tea then back on the bus for a long drive back to Alice with a lunch stop along the way. The second treat of the day is to ride the awesome amazing 25 km mountain bike single track, the fast and flowy new “Emily Gap trail” at Alice, ride all the way back to the hotel before heading out for a farewell dinner in town. Bike rental finishes at 5 pm. Bus transfer 6.45 pm hotel pick up to and from dinner in Alice Springs. Dinner venue TBA.

Day 7Alice Springs (A)

As the challenge comes to an end, today is a well earnt rest day where you can sleep in, clean any gear and get packed to fly home. Bus transfer 11.15 am to airport drop off from Double Tree to airport.
